How Kalumu works

Everything you need to know about buying and selling crypto on Kalumu — Kenya's trusted OTC platform.

Buying Crypto (On-ramp)

Convert KES to BTC or USDT in minutes

Go to Trade → select Buy

Navigate to the Trade page and click the 'Buy' tab at the top of the card.

Enter amount

Type the amount of KES you want to spend, or the amount of BTC/USDT you want to receive. The other field updates automatically.

Get a live quote

Click 'Get Quote' to see the current rate, spread, and exact amounts. The quote is valid for 45 seconds — always get a fresh quote before paying.

Confirm the trade

Review the quote details and click 'Confirm'. You'll need to be signed in — if not, you'll be redirected to sign in first.

Send payment via M-Pesa or bank transfer

Use M-Pesa Lipa na M-Pesa (Paybill: 400200, Account: your trade reference) or bank transfer. Send the exact amount shown.

Receive crypto in your wallet

Once payment is confirmed, crypto is automatically sent to your registered wallet address. This typically takes 5–10 minutes.

Selling Crypto (Off-ramp)

Convert BTC or USDT back to KES

Go to Trade → select Sell

Navigate to the Trade page and click the 'Sell' tab.

Enter amount

Enter the amount of crypto you want to sell or the KES amount you want to receive.

Get a quote

Click 'Get Quote' to see the current sell rate. Valid for 45 seconds.

Confirm and provide payment details

Enter your M-Pesa phone number or bank account number where you want to receive KES.

Send crypto to the deposit address

After confirming, you'll be shown a crypto deposit address. Send the exact amount of crypto specified to this address.

Receive KES in your account

Once the blockchain transaction is confirmed (typically 15–30 minutes), KES is sent to your M-Pesa or bank account.

KYC Verification

Required for higher trading limits

Why it's needed

KYC (Know Your Customer) verification is required by Kenyan financial regulations. It helps protect our platform from fraud and ensures compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) rules.

  • Kenya National ID
  • Passport (international)
  • Driving License

You'll also need to take a selfie for identity verification.
